Resume summary ideas: 40+ examples by job, and a formula for your own
A resume summary is two or three sentences at the top of your resume that say what you do, how long you have done it, what you are best at, and one result that proves it. Aim for roughly 40 to 80 words, write it in the first person without the word "I", and rewrite the first sentence for each type of job you apply to so it uses the posting's job title.
This page gives you a formula, a worked example built step by step, more than forty summary examples grouped by job, versions for entry-level, career-change and executive resumes, and side-by-side rewrites of weak summaries.

A formula for a professional summary
Most strong summaries have the same four parts, in this order. The first two are required; the third is what makes a reader believe the first two; the fourth is optional.
- 1Who you are: the job title you hold or want, your years of experience, and the setting (type of employer, size, specialty).
- 2What you are best at: one or two specialties, written in the words the job posting uses.
- 3Proof: one result, with a number if you have one. Pick the result most relevant to the job you want, not the biggest one you have.
- 4Optional extra: a license, a language, a clearance, or the direction you are heading, if it changes how a reader sees you.
Property manager with 6 years running mid-size apartment communities in the Phoenix area.
Specialize in lease-up, resident retention and vendor contracts for buildings of 150 to 300 units.
Raised the renewal rate at a 220-unit community from 48% to 61% in two years by reworking move-in follow-up and maintenance response times.

How long a resume summary should be
Two or three sentences, which usually lands between 40 and 80 words, or about three to five lines on the page. ResumeFinch's strength score asks for at least 150 characters, because anything shorter tends to be a job title and an adjective with nothing a reader can use.
The upper limit matters as much. The summary sits in the most-read part of the page, and every extra line pushes your experience further down. If yours runs past five lines, it has usually turned into a list of everything you have done. Keep the single most relevant result and move the rest into bullets.
Resume summary examples by job
Every summary below comes from the examples library inside the ResumeFinch builder, grouped by job title. Where a job has its own example page on this site, the title links to it, with a full sample resume that shows the summary in context. Use these to see how the formula looks in different fields, then write your own version with your real numbers and setting; a summary copied as-is will read like everyone else's.

Entry-level, career-change and executive summaries
The formula holds at every stage, but what goes in each part shifts. With little experience, the proof comes from school, training or part-time work. In a career change, the first sentence names the job you want and the rest translates your old work into its terms. At the executive level, the scale (budget, headcount, revenue) becomes the main signal.

Summary vs objective vs profile
These names get used loosely, and the heading matters less than what the paragraph talks about: your record, or what you want next.
| Heading | What it says | Best for | Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summary or Professional Summary | Your experience, strengths and a result that proves them | Anyone with experience relevant to the job | 2 to 3 sentences |
| Objective or Career Objective | The job you want and what you bring to it | No experience, career changes, internships, relocations | 1 to 2 sentences |
| Profile or Personal Profile | The same content as a summary, sometimes a little longer | UK-style CVs, where "personal profile" and "personal statement" are the usual names | 3 to 5 sentences |
| Summary of Qualifications | Three to five bullets of headline facts (license, years, specialties) | Licensed and technical roles where the facts carry the case | 3 to 5 bullets |
| Headline | One line under your name: your title and specialty | Everyone, as a complement to the summary | Under 10 words |
If you are deciding between an objective and a summary, the resume objective examples guide covers when an objective is still the better choice. For how a CV differs from a resume beyond the summary, see the CV vs resume guide.
Weak vs strong resume summaries
Each weak version below follows a common pattern. The strong version keeps the same person and fixes the problem named underneath.
Weak
Hard-working, results-driven professional seeking a challenging role where I can grow my skills.
Stronger
Payroll specialist with 5 years processing multi-state payroll for 900 employees, with no late tax filings across 20 quarters.
The weak version describes what you want, not what you offer, and every adjective in it could describe anyone.
Weak
Experienced in many areas including sales, marketing, management, customer service and administration.
Stronger
Field sales representative for commercial HVAC service contracts, with 4 years selling to property managers and school districts. Grew a territory from $1.1M to $1.6M in annual contract value.
Listing every area makes you look unfocused. One clear lane, with the buyers named, tells the reader exactly where you fit.
Weak
Event coordinator with a proven track record of success and a passion for creating memorable experiences.
Stronger
Event coordinator who has planned 60+ corporate conferences and offsites of 50 to 400 guests, usually on fixed budgets under $150K.
"Proven track record" asks the reader to take your word for it. Counts and budgets show the record.
Weak
I am a detail-oriented bookkeeper and I have worked with many small businesses and I am good with QuickBooks.
Stronger
Bookkeeper for 12 small businesses at a time, from landscapers to dental offices, keeping monthly books closed by the 10th in QuickBooks Online and Xero.
Drop "I" and the run-on structure. Resume summaries use implied first person, which reads tighter.
Phrases to cut from a summary
- "Seeking a position" or "looking for an opportunity": the reader knows you want the job. Use the space for what you bring.
- "Results-driven", "self-starter", "go-getter": claims every applicant makes. Replace each with a result.
- "Team player" on its own. Name the team and what you did for it.
- "Various", "many", "numerous": swap in the actual number, even an approximate one.
- References to a specific company name, unless you are certain to send this version only to that company.
- Soft skills strung together with commas. Pick the one your bullets prove and drop the rest.
Tailoring your summary to each job
You do not need a new summary for every application. Change the first sentence so the job title matches the posting, swap the specialty in the second part for whatever the posting stresses most, and choose the result that fits that employer. A property manager applying to a student-housing company and to a luxury condo firm would keep the same years and setting but lead with different strengths.
Save each variant as its own resume so you are not editing the same file back and forth. In ResumeFinch, My resumes holds several resumes side by side, so you can keep one per type of role and open whichever fits the posting.
How to write your summary in ResumeFinch
Open the Summary section in the builder. The box shows a character count as you type, and the strength score marks the summary as done at 150 characters or more. Below the box, the Browse summary examples button opens the examples drawer, already searched for the headline under your name (or your latest job title if the headline is empty). Search any other job to see its summaries.
Inserting an example replaces whatever is in the box, so copy anything you want to keep first. Then edit the inserted text: change the years, the setting and the numbers to your own, and rewrite the specialty in the posting's words. To call the section "Profile" or "Professional Summary", rename it with the pencil icon on its card; the heading changes on the page, the PDF and the Word file.
Frequently asked questions
Should a resume summary be written in first person?
Use implied first person: write as yourself but leave out "I", "me" and "my" ("Manage a team of 12" rather than "I manage a team of 12"). Third person ("Dana is a payroll specialist") reads oddly on a document you wrote yourself.
Do I need a summary if my one-page resume is already full?
Usually yes, because it is the part most readers see first and it frames everything below it. Make room by trimming older bullets rather than cutting the summary. The exception is a very short, entry-level resume where an objective or a strong education section does the same job.
Is a CV personal statement the same as a resume summary?
Close. A personal statement or personal profile on a UK-style CV covers the same ground (who you are, what you are good at, what you want next) but often runs three to five sentences and says a little more about your goals. An academic personal statement for a university application is a different, much longer document.
How should I write a summary with 20 or more years of experience?
Lead with the level and scope you work at rather than the full count of years, which can read as a number to subtract from. "Operations leader who has run plants of 300 to 900 people" says more than "25 years of experience". Keep the proof to your most recent and most relevant result.
Can I copy a resume summary example word for word?
You can, but it will not do much for you. Examples are written for a typical person in the role, so they lack your setting, your numbers and your specialty, which are the parts that persuade. Use an example for its structure, then replace each detail with yours.
