What the resume checker looks at
These are the same checks the ResumeFinch builder runs live while you write. Each one is weighted by how much it matters to recruiters:
- Add your full name
- Add an email address employers can reach
- Add a phone number
- Add your city and state; recruiters filter by location
- Add the job title you're targeting under your name
- Add your LinkedIn profile URL
- Write a 2 or 3 sentence summary
- Add at least one job with a title and company
- Add start dates to every job
- Give your most recent job at least 3 achievement bullets
- Add numbers to more bullets (%, $, counts, time saved)
- Start bullets with an action verb instead of "Responsible for" (0 to fix)
- Add your education or training
- List at least 5 skills that match the jobs you want
- Trim to 1 or 2 pages; recruiters skim
An ATS CV checker that shows its work
Applicant tracking systems pull your name, contact details, job titles, dates and skills out of the file before a recruiter sees anything. When that fails, your resume can rank low or show up with blank fields. The checker reads your file the way a simple parser does and lists exactly what it found, so you can spot a missing email or an unrecognised section heading before an employer does.
The most common problems are layout problems: contact details placed in the page header, two-column tables, text boxes and graphics. The surest fix is a one-column layout with standard headings, which is what every ATS-friendly resume template in ResumeFinch uses.
Resume checker FAQ
Is the resume checker free?
Yes. Checking your resume is free, with no signup and no limit. You only pay if you build a resume in ResumeFinch and download it.
Is my resume uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read by your own browser: PDFs with pdf.js, Word files by unzipping them locally. The text is checked on your device and never sent to our servers.
Is this an ATS CV checker?
It checks what matters to applicant tracking systems: whether your contact details and standard section headings can be read from the file, and whether your experience has dates and bullet points. It works the same for a resume or a CV. It does not reproduce any specific vendor's ATS.
Why does it say something is missing when it's on my resume?
If the checker can't read it, a parser may not either. Contact details in the page header, text in text boxes or tables, and words inside images are the usual causes. Moving them into the body as plain text fixes it.
Which files can I check?
Text-based PDFs, Word (.docx) files and plain text, up to 5 MB, or paste the text. Scanned PDFs are images, so no text can be read from them.
Fix it faster in the builder
