Engineering and trades
A good engineering resume shows what you designed or built, the tools and standards you used, and where you stand on the licensure path, all on a page dense enough to hold real numbers. The sample below is a mechanical design engineer with EIT status, laid out in Keystone, a compact one-column template.
Further down are bullets for design, testing, manufacturing, civil site work and electrical power, plus what changes for new graduates. Every number in the example bullets is a placeholder: replace it with a figure you measured or can defend in an interview.
The example opens as a new resume you can edit. Free to build and preview; downloads are a one-time payment, no subscription.
The person and employers in this sample are fictional, and its numbers are placeholders to replace with your own.
Engineering managers read a design bullet for the constraint you designed to: a load, a fit, a code clause, a cost target. Name the part or system, the tool, and the number that shows it met the requirement.
Test bullets prove you can close the loop between the model and the hardware. Say what you tested, against which procedure or requirement, and what changed in the design because of the result.
Most engineering work is finally judged on what it cost to build and whether it shipped on time. A savings figure reads as credible when the bullet names the design change that produced it.
A civil resume is read for project type, project size and who approved the work. Give the acreage, length or flow, the software, and how the plans fared in agency review.
Electrical bullets need the voltage class, the governing code or standard, and the size of the system, because a 120 V branch circuit and a 13.8 kV switchgear lineup are different jobs.
| Credential | Issued by | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam | NCEES (National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying) | Computer-based, offered year-round at approved Pearson test centers, in a discipline such as Mechanical, Civil, or Electrical and Computer. List the discipline and the year you passed. |
| Engineer in Training (EIT) or Engineer Intern (EI) | Your state engineering licensing board | Granted by the board after you pass the FE and apply. The two names mean the same status; use your state's term, and list it only once the board has issued it. |
| Professional Engineer (PE) license | State engineering licensing boards (PE exam written by NCEES) | The common path is an ABET-accredited degree, the FE, about four years of progressive experience, then the PE exam in your discipline. Each state licenses separately, so name every state. |
| Certified SOLIDWORKS Associate (CSWA) or Professional (CSWP) | Dassault Systèmes SolidWorks | Worth listing for design roles where SolidWorks is the primary CAD package. |
| GDTP (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Professional), Technologist or Senior | ASME | Certified to one edition of Y14.5, such as 2018, so state the edition. |
| What is measured | How to phrase it |
|---|---|
| Tolerance or fit held | Held bore position within 0.002 in across a 4-part stack-up |
| Unit or project cost | Cut unit cost by $28 by converting a machined bracket to a stamping |
| Test result against the requirement | Passed 1,000 hours of salt spray against a 500-hour requirement |
| Schedule | Released the drawing package 3 weeks before tooling kickoff |
| Project size | Lead design engineer on a $6M, 2.4 MGD lift station |
| Review outcome | Plan set approved by the state DOT on the first submittal |
Mechanical engineering graduate and EIT with two co-op terms testing hydraulic components. Led a 4-person senior design team that took a solar-powered irrigation pump from SolidWorks model to a working prototype tested at 30 gallons per minute. Comfortable with GD&T, MATLAB and hands-on fabrication.
Civil engineer (EIT) with 5 years of land development design, preparing grading, drainage and utility plans in Civil 3D for commercial and residential sites. Has carried 20+ projects from concept through municipal approval and sits for the PE Civil exam this spring.
Professional Engineer licensed in Ohio and Indiana with 12 years designing power distribution for hospitals and data centers. Seals medium-voltage service designs, leads coordination and arc flash studies, and runs a team of 4 designers from schematic design through construction administration.
Licensure is a screening fact for many engineering roles, especially in civil and power work where only a PE can seal drawings, so it goes where a reader sees it in the first few seconds. Experience follows because design and test results carry the most weight. New graduates should move Education and Projects above Experience until they hold a full-time engineering role, since a senior design project with test data is often stronger evidence than a summer job.
Yes, once your state board has actually granted it. "Jordan Lee, EIT" is a common format and engineering managers know what it means. Some states call the same status Engineer Intern (EI), so use your state's term. If you passed the FE but never applied for the designation, list the exam, discipline and year in your licenses section instead.
Only with a date: "FE exam (Civil), scheduled March 2027." NCEES offers the FE year-round on computer, so a firm date is easy to give. A vague "pursuing EIT" line reads as filler.
Senior design, co-op and internship terms, and competition teams such as Formula SAE or ASCE's Concrete Canoe, each written like a job: your role, the tool, the constraint, the test result.
Describe the type of part and the engineering, not the customer or program. "Designed a titanium bracket for a defense aircraft program" can become "Designed a lightweight titanium bracket for an aerospace customer, cutting mass by 15%." Use percentages when the real values are sensitive.
Usually when a licensed engineer needs a project list, which is common in civil, structural and consulting firms that win work on qualifications. Keep page one for your summary, licenses and recent roles; the project list (name, client type, size, your role) goes on page two.
Open it in the builder, replace the details with your own and watch the page update as you type.
